Workplace Coaching

“COACHING IS UNLOCKING A PERSON’S POTENTIAL TO MAXIMIZE THEIR OWN PERFORMANCE. IT’S HELPING THEM TO LEARN RATHER THAN TEACHING THEM.”

– Tim Gallwey

CASE STUDY

CONQUERING CONFIDENCE

When Liz took over as executive director at an Iowa non-profit, she was ready. She had been preparing for this transition for more than a year. She had trained with and job-shadowed the former executive director. She understood the budget, she was fluent in the strategic plan, she had good relationships with the staff, and most importantly, she was excited to lead. What she wasn’t prepared for was all the self-doubt. Suddenly, she was alone at the top and felt the weight of all the expectations she had for herself.

COACHING IS A PARTNERSHIP

Liz reached out to Anna because she wanted to work on being more confident. Liz assumed that Anna would give her instructions and assignments to build her confidence, and by the end of a few sessions, she’d achieve her goal. Liz was surprised to learn that coaching isn’t about giving advice and prescribing activities. Instead, Liz learned that the coaching model puts the client in the driver’s seat: She was the expert of her own experience. During the first few sessions, Anna guided Liz to share her story. Anna asked powerful questions that helped Liz re-center her values, and discover that she is inherently resourceful and capable of facing challenges head-on.

CONFIDENCE THROUGH CURIOSITY

After nine sessions spread over three months, Liz was feeling more like herself. Of course, self-doubt creeps into her thoughts from time to time, but now she’s able to turn the doubt into curiosity. Thanks to the skills she built during her sessions with Anna, Liz can observe her self-doubt more objectively and train her focus on her strengths.

“Having Anna as my coach has been transformative. I see her as an unbiased ally who helps me dig out the answers that are deep inside of me,” Liz says.

Liz and Anna now meet monthly to continue processing Liz’s leadership journey together. Liz views these sessions with Anna to be as essential as a budget meeting. Coaching keeps Liz focused on her personal values, which drive her actions, give her purpose, and create balance.
